When I was contacted for this project, to be absolutely honest my initial impression was a “surprise”. Yes, I have done multiple poster projects in past, but a political poster? Not something I have ever done. However I believes in that challenge make an artist grow. And it was probably one of the most exciting challenge I have encounter recently.
As a Japanese living in the US for the past ten years, 2008 was probably the first time I have seriously got into politics. It definitely was the first time I donated to a presidential candidate. As an immigrant recently granted a permanent resident status, I have my own opinions about immigration policies and homeland security.
I came up with a lot of rough sketches and ideas, but the difficult part was that most of them would have worked well if they were editorial illustrations within the US, but once the context is moved outside of the border and in the poster form, most of them either did not work or the had danger of interpreted differently from my original intentions. After talking to the show organizers, we came to a conclusion that we all liked this most simple idea best.
Mountains of killed sketches were not waste though. I learnt a lot and grew as an artist with this project and the challenge. Besides, one of the killed idea was picked up by a political magazine in the US as a visual commentary. Now, that was not bad.
